What is a department?

Chalmers is divided into 13 departments that carry out most of the university’s activity. The departments are responsible for research and also provide all courses included in the programmes. Within each department, there is a Department council that advises the department management and works with strategic issues within the department’s areas of responsibility.

The Department council includes the Head of department, two teacher representatives, four industry representatives, one administrative staff representative, one member appointed by the President of Chalmers, one doctoral student, and two student representatives. Student representatives may either be part of the Department Council or work with the Head of department in other ways to highlight the student perspective, and it varies between departments.

What does a Department representative do?

They get an insight into the departmental activity and contribute to strategic development. They also ensure that students’ opinions are not overlooked during major changes and raise current study related issues. This is done by:

  • Highlighting educational issues within the department
  • Contributing to the department’s strategic work
  • Discussing issues with department management

Department representatives also maintain regular contact with the Student Union’s Office of Educational affairs to assess how the department is functioning and whether any problems or challenges have arisen.

How do I contact them?

Each department has mailing lists through which you can reach the representatives:

You can also contact them via your student division board.

Get involved as a Department representative!

Are you interested in representing students’ views, working with strategic departmental issues, and meeting teachers, doctoral students, administrators, and industry representatives? Then you might be a good fit as a Department representative!

Each department has two student representatives. In the autumn, student divisions nominate representatives to departments depending on how closely connected the student division is to the department’s activity. Representatives are elected for a one-year term starting after the new year. To learn more about the role, contact uo@chalmersstudentkar.se. To apply, contact your student division board.
